A brand-new, 360-degree-rotating folding phone hinge is displayed by Samsung Display 2023

Samsung has a brand-new prototype display that might give its folding phones a 360-degree turn.

At CES 2023, Samsung Display, a division of the firm that produces its panels, displayed the new prototype display and hinge. According to business representative John Lucas, the "Flex In & Out" display can fold inward and outward and spin 360 degrees.

Additionally, the display has a new type of hinge that, according to claims, results in a far less noticeable wrinkle. That's because the "water-drop hinge" might make the display assume a looser shape when folded inward, resembling a waterdrop. Additionally, the display would be less stressed by this finer hinge.

Samsung Display had previously displayed a "Flex In & Out" prototype that embraces the fold-in-all-direction concept. According to Tom's Guide, a "Flex In & Out" display also appeared at the 2021 International Meeting for Information Displays (IMID) in South Korea. The strategy was different, though, as the display folded into a shape with several portions. As of the August 2022 release of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung's Fold line continues to employ displays that can only fold flat in one direction.

However, it's probable that the new screen may be incorporated into the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to rumors, the smartphone might have a less obvious crease because of a similar hinge design.

The design would correct what some consider to be a weakness in the "U"-A shaped hinge that results in a noticeable wrinkle on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. Additionally, it would bring the Galaxy Z Fold 5 closer to competing folding smartphones like the Oppo Find N2 and the third-generation Motorola Razr which have less obvious creases.

Although the exact date of Samsung's Z Fold 5 release is unknown, we anticipate that it will coincide with the August release of the Galaxy Z Flip 5. All eyes are currently focused on the new Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which will be unveiled on February 1st during the company's forthcoming Galaxy Unpacked event.
